AN ODESSEY TO SHOWCASE THE MALARICKAL WATER LILY PHENOMENON

Share Now

MALARIKKAL, nestled in the enchanting Thiruvarppu Panchayat near Kumarakom in Kottayam, Kerala has quickly become a viral sensation as a must-visit seasonal tourist hotspot!

Imagine stepping into a breathtaking 750-acre Pink water lily (Ambal) field where, from dawn till daylight, you’re greeted by a stunning sea of pink ambal flowers stretching as far as the eye can see. It’s a captivating sight that draws hundreds of eager visitors each year, all wanting to witness this rare and mesmerizing spectacle.

At first glance, you might think you’ve stumbled upon a serene backwater, but it’s actually a classic paddy field! After harvest, these fields fill with water, transforming into a picturesque watery landscape that showcases the vibrant ambal blooms, naturally. These stunning pink flowers flourish during June, July, and August, with some rare white ambal flowers adding an air of mystery.

Once the rains cease and the waters recede, the show of natural beauty will close its doors until the next rainy season. Farmers then apply herbicides to clear the ambal plants, but fear not, for beneath the surface lie tubers that will grow and bloom again next year; a fascinating cycle that brings the fields back to life just in time for visitors like you! Experiencing the ambal spring in Malarikkal is as essential as witnessing the rare Neelakurinji bloom in Munnar.

Directions and Timing

Located just 10 km from Kottayam and 12 km from Kumarakom, reaching Malarikkal is part of the thrill! From Kottayam, after Illikkal on the Kumarakom route, turn left onto Thiruvarppu road and prepare for an exciting drive through winding paths. Keep an eye out for waterlogged areas and follow the direction signs. For precise navigation, just type “Malarikkal waterlily viewpoint” into Google Maps, and you’ll be guided straight to paradise, just after the new Kanjiram Over Bridge.

The floral display is absolutely spectacular right now! The flowers bloom only from 5:30 am to around 9:30 am, so plan to arrive bright and early for the most unforgettable views. Morning photography enthusiasts will love the special market that celebrates nature’s artistry at dawn.

Don’t forget: your destination is the bustling landing near the Gurudeva temple in Malarikkal. Along the way, marvel at the stunning water lily flowers blossoming in various spots. Just a word of caution—some friendly locals may wave you over, but remember, the true 750-acre ambal field awaits across from the Gurudeva temple!

Boat Rides and Fees

If the weather holds, boats will start arriving at 6 am, so get ready for an exhilarating ride! With the increase in visitors, you’ll find plenty of boats waiting to take you on this magical journey through the flowers.

You have two thrilling options for boat rides!

  1. Rs. 100 per person for a half-hour ride, cruising near the ambal fields for a quick glimpse.
  2. Rs. 1,000 per boat for a one and a half hour adventure during peak season! This longer trip takes you 2.5km inland, where you can stop in the heart of the ambals for incredible photos and videos. Plus, keep an eye out for the half submerged Valyaveedu Devi Temple, a sight that adds allure to your journey!

Each boat can hold 5 to 7 people, and whether you’re in a duo or a full crew, the price remains the same. You might even snag a lower rate during quieter times.

There is no entry fee. Be sure to wear safety jackets and follow their instructions. For the best ride experience, opt for the smaller boats, aka “kothumpu vallom” —more fun than the large boats! Most of the boats are equipped with motors, but be ready to paddle once you reach the heart of the ambal blooms. Safety-wise, the waters may look like backwaters, but they’re shallow enough for most, so don’t worry!

Other Useful Information

Don’t miss out on the charming ambal flower bunches available for sale at the pier—grab a bunch for just Rs. 30 to complete your photo ops! Remember, only pick one flower for your snap while on the boat, as the boatmen are strict about that.

Parking can be a bit chaotic during holiday rushes, so arrive early or be prepared for a hike. Temporary tea shops help quench your thirst, but there aren’t many large stores or hotels around.

If you’re traveling from afar, consider staying overnight to soak in everything Kumarakom has to offer! And for the food lovers, don’t forget to sample local delights like sweet potatoes, kappa, Kumarakom’s special carp, and tantalizing duck roast, you won’t regret it!

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure at Malarikkal, where nature’s beauty awaits!
