The Alberta government is launching redesigned driver’s licences and ID cards that integrate personal health numbers and Canadian citizenship markers to streamline access to services and reduce the need for multiple identification documents.

Alberta’s government is issuing new and renewed cards that will incorporate personal health numbers and Canadian citizenship markers. By combining identity, personal health numbers and citizenship information on one document, Albertans will no longer need to carry multiple pieces of ID to access programs and services.
The new cards will feature a new modern design that is reflective of the province’s rich history and identity. The new cards also include enhanced security features that will help protect against fraud. Over time, this transition will reduce and ultimately eliminate the need for paper Alberta Health Care cards.

Albertans applying for or renewing a driver’s licence or ID card will need to show proof they are legally entitled to be in Canada. Those who confirm Canadian citizenship will have a citizenship marker added to their card. Eligible non-citizens can still obtain a licence or ID card, and a one-time 60-day grace period may be available for Albertans needing additional time to obtain the required documents.

To add the personal health number onto their card, eligible Albertans must bring their Alberta Health Care card, valid ID and proof of legal entitlement when applying for or renewing a driver’s licence or ID card. Registry agents will verify Alberta Health Care eligibility in person, including for dependent family members. Once this process is complete, the personal health numbers will be added to the licence or ID card.
