Journalist Bala Menon Takes Home Top Prize in Short Story Contest

Brampton-based journalist and writer Bala Menon has been awarded the top prize in the 2025 Bernarda Smrdelj Short Story Contest by the Writers & Editors Network, Toronto. Menon received a Certificate of Recognition, signed by network President Maria Pia Marchelletta, and a cheque from Contest Judge Domenico Capilongo on July 19, 2025.

The award-winning story, “Waiting for Allison,” explores themes of memory loss with unexpected twists and a surprising conclusion. Capilongo, a renowned poet and creative writing teacher at the York Region Board of Education, presented the award at the Canadiana Restaurant in Etobicoke.

Menon’s winning story will be featured in the WEN 2025 Anthology, set to be published later this year. The Writers & Editors Network’s recognition highlights Menon’s talent and dedication to the craft of storytelling.
