A Tale of Two MCAC Badminton Tournaments of 2025

This spring, the Malayalee Cultural Association of Calgary (MCAC) offered much more than just badminton matches—it fostered a sense of community, friendly competition, and connections across generations. Through two back-to-back tournaments, MCAC demonstrated how a simple sport can unite people in extraordinary ways.

April 26 – Power & Precision: The Adults Take Flight

The first tournament of 2025 took place on April 26 at the Sunridge Badminton Centre, signaling the official launch of MCAC’s spring sports season. The event brought together a dynamic mix of adult players from the Calgary Malayalee community—seasoned athletes, weekly regulars, and first-time participants—all ready to compete with grit and poise.

The atmosphere inside the hall was charged with energy. Every corner resonated with the sharp thwack of shuttlecocks, the squeaking of sneakers on polished floors, and the enthusiastic cheers from teammates and families. With intense rallies, lightning-fast reflexes, and strategic finesse, the tournament showcased the talent and dedication of its participants.

But beyond the rallies, the day was about connection. Old friends reunited during doubles matches, new friendships formed among competitors, and the sidelines transformed into social spaces filled with laughter and encouragement. The camaraderie was unmistakable—reminding everyone that community, not just competition, is the real prize.

Adding to the warmth of the day was a delicious lunch generously provided by Olive Restaurant, bringing players and supporters together off the court for some well-earned rest, shared stories, and joyful conversations.

In every match played and every handshake exchanged, April 26 became a powerful reminder of how sport can uplift, unite, and energize a community. And this was only the beginning.

May 31 – A Festival of Rackets: All Ages, All Heart

On Saturday, May 31, the courts once again came alive at Sunridge Badminton Centre—this time in a lively, all-ages celebration of sport, family, and friendship. MCAC hosted one of its largest and most inclusive badminton tournaments to date, drawing in over 90 enthusiastic participants across five vibrant categories:

  • Under 14 (U14) Doubles – Boys, Girls & Mixed
  • Under 18 (U18) Doubles – Boys
  • Ladies Doubles
  • Mixed Doubles
  • 50+ Doubles

From the first shuttle serve to the last victorious point, the tournament buzzed with energy and emotion. The incredible growth in participation over the years reflected MCAC’s rising impact in promoting active, intergenerational engagement.

The U14 matches were a delightful display of early talent, as young players showcased composure, coordination, and enthusiasm far beyond their years. The U18 category ramped up the intensity with lightning-quick rallies, diving saves, and spirited competition—proving that the next generation of Malayalee athletes is more than ready for the spotlight.

In the Ladies Doubles, players brought elegance, fierce focus, and uplifting camaraderie to the courts. The Mixed Doubles category was a crowd favourite, offering thrilling moments and heartwarming chemistry between partners. Meanwhile, the ever-inspiring 50+ Doubles reminded everyone that age is no barrier to joy, skill, and spirited play—serving up wisdom with every serve and volley.

A Community in Motion

This wasn’t just a tournament—it was a community celebration. Parents coached and cheered, siblings teamed up, and even light-hearted rivalries emerged, adding joy and humour to the day. Families didn’t just watch—they played, supported one another, and laughed together.

From first-time players experiencing the thrill of their first win to long-time members reconnecting between matches, the day captured the very essence of MCAC’s mission:

To bring people together, nurture talent, and create lasting memories through culture and activity.

By the end of the day, it was clear: this wasn’t just a sports event—it was a festival of inclusion, heritage, and shared humanity. Every person’s unique contribution was celebrated, making each player and spectator feel valued and respected.

Beyond the Court: The MCAC Spirit

MCAC extends its heartfelt gratitude to the generous sponsors whose support elevated the tournaments:

  • Rajeev (Realtor)
  • Jitesh (Allstate Insurance)
  • Harvest Hills Family Dental
  • Olive Restaurant (event catering)

From sponsoring trophies to providing refreshments, their partnership made a meaningful impact—creating a well-organized, festive, and welcoming experience for all involved.

Across both tournaments, the unwavering spirit of MCAC was unmistakable. These events weren’t just about titles and scores—they were about showing up, lifting each other up, and celebrating every small moment that makes a community strong.
