THOMAS A J

Thomas, A.J. An Indian English poet, fiction writer, translator, and editor. He translates poetry, fiction, drama, and non-fiction prose from Malayalam to English, with more than 25 titles to his credit. Has M.Phil, and Ph.D. degrees in English Literature (Translation Studies) from School of Letters, M.G. University, Kottayam. He was Editor of Indian Literature and is its Guest Editor presently. Taught English in Benghazi University, Ajdabiya Campus, Libya from 2008 to 2014. He was also a Senior Consultant at IGNOU. His contributions include Germination (Poetry, 1989), Aagami Pal Ka Nirman (His poetry in Hindi translation-2010); two of Paul Zacharia’s short-story collections(co-translator), Bhaskara Pattelar and Other Stories, (Manas, 1993), Reflections of a Hen in Her Last Hour and Other Stories (Penguin India), the Jnanpith awardee poet ONV Kurup’s verse-novel Ujjayini, (Rupa) and a poetry collection of ONV This Ancient Lyre (Sahitya Akademi) which he edited, and had also translated a majority of the poems; ONV’s long poem, Dinaantam(The End of the Day, D.c.Books, Kottayam, 2015); Keshavante Vilapangal(Keshavan’s Lamentations, Rupa, Delhi 2007), M.Mukuindan’s novel on E.M.S.Nambudiripad he translated won him the Crossword Award(2007) which is known as the Indian Booker Prize; he also translated Perumpadavam Sreedharan’s acclaimed novel Oru Sankeertanam Pole (Like A Psalm, 2017, LiFi, Delhi); Best of Indian Literature, a four-volume anthology of Indian literature in 1600 pages, crown size, which he co-edited and many more. He has several anthology appearances in international publications. A recipient of Katha Award, AKMG Prize (which enabled him to tour the USA, UK, and Europe in 1997), and Crossword Award (2007). He has won a Senior Fellowship of the Department of Culture, Govt. of India and has been an Honorary Fellow, Department of Culture, Government of South Korea. He has been invited thrice as a Guest Speaker in writers’ conferences and readings in South Korea. He has read his poems and made presentations in Biennial Symposia of Asia-Pacific Writers in Australia and Hong Kong, on invitation, and also in conferences in Thailand and Nepal.
