Lionel Messi has been honoured with the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, one of Spain’s most prestigious recognitions.
Argentina and Inter Miami star Lionel Messi has been awarded the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, becoming the first footballer in history to receive the honour individually.
The jury praised Messi for his “dazzling talent, exceptional sporting career, and remarkable charitable work promoting education and healthcare for disadvantaged children.” The award, presented in Oviedo, Spain, recognizes global contributions in fields including sports, arts, and humanitarian service. Messi, the most decorated footballer with 47 career titles, was selected from 27 candidates across 12 countries. The committee highlighted his humility, consistency, and exemplary behaviour on and off the field.
Messi will receive a Joan Miró sculpture, a diploma, a badge, and €50,000 at the official ceremony presided over by the Spanish Royal Family.
